MIDLAND — Midland Dow does not have to introduce its quarterback.
Senior Wynn Diegel returns after completing 218 of 311 passes (70 percent) for 3,085 yards with 33 touchdowns and four interceptions, all single-season school records. He was MLive Saginaw Offensive Player of the Year and Midland Daily News Dream Team Player of the Year.
Coach Matt Peterson said: "Having Wynn back means everything. He's gotten even better as far as leadership and understanding of our offense. His communication is like having a coach on the field."
Peterson is in year 7 with a 35-25 record. The Chargers were 10-2, 5-1 in the SVL North; their only regular-season loss was 63-39 at Mount Pleasant, and they beat Midland High 34-7.
In the playoffs they won 51-15 over Waterford Mott and 21-12 over East Lansing, then lost 42-7 to Orchard Lake St. Mary's, the Division 2 state champion. It was Dow's first district title in 10 years and first regional appearance in a decade.
WEYI reported a 20-player senior class. MHSAA lists the school as H.H. Dow High School, enrollment 1,223, Class A, 11-player Division 2.
Week 1 is Thursday, Aug. 27 at Fenton; Week 2 is Thursday, Sept. 3 vs. Heritage; the finale is Oct. 23 at Midland High, where the Chemics lead the series 43-19.
Peterson called the SVL North a quarterback gauntlet; every North starting quarterback is back except Bay City Central's Bo Frederick, who transferred.
Also back: Justin Corle, Jaden Elford, Ryan Kerr, Finn MacGregor, Blake Studebaker, Landon Williams, Jameson Zimmer, Travis Clark and Dylan Geary.
